“Employ your time in improving yourself by other men’s writings so that you shall come easily by what others have labored hard for.” ~ Socrates
In the coming months you will begin to see a summary of business books that I have read and/or listened to and believe that the information is valuable and insightful enough to share with others. Most of the books will be of a business nature but others will include biographies and self-help. I have averaged reading a book a month for the past several years and plan to continue. I do love a physical book to hold when I am reading. When I do, it is usually at night before going to sleep. So, it can take a while for me to complete.
However, the most effective way I have discovered to read is to listen to the book. It makes it so convenient to listen and immerse myself while walking, cooking or working out. The other benefit is I can take notes while listening, repeat sections or even speed up the audio. Depending on the book, I will then order a hard copy to keep for reference or to give as a gift. Some are so good that I will re-listen to them to refresh the concepts, re-hear the story, gain a new perspective or to get re-inspired.
Interesting fact, Americans are not reading very much
“Somebody who only reads newspapers and at best books of contemporary authors looks to me like an extremely near-sighted person who scorns eyeglasses. He is completely dependent on the prejudices and fashions of his times, since he never gets to see or hear anything else.” ~ Albert Einstein
According to the Pew Research Center in 2016, “About a quarter of American adults (24%) say they haven’t read a book in whole or in part in the past year, whether in print, electronic or audio form.” The research also stated that “the typical (median) American has read four books in the past 12 months.” Admittedly, I was one of those non-readers, except for technical books related to SQL and sometimes the paper on Sunday.
Rich Man, Poor Man
“A reader lives a thousand lives before he dies . . . The man who never reads lives only one.” ~ George R.R. Martin
According to Tom Corley, the author of ” Rich Habits: The Daily Success Habits Of Wealthy Individuals.” His research finds that the key difference between rich and poor people, the former read for self-improvement. “The overall conclusion that I reached in my research is that your daily habits will dictate your financial success in life, and there are four or five key ones,” says Corley. “The rich are voracious readers on how to improve themselves. They’re reading self-improvement books, biographies, books about successful people, things like that.”
Successful people are readers
Want to know one habit ultra-successful people have in common? According to a Huffington Post article in 2016, they read. “But successful people don’t just read anything. They are highly selective about what they read, opting to be educated over being entertained. They believe that books are a gateway to learning and knowledge.”
Here are just a few top business leaders and entrepreneurs who make reading a major part of their daily lifestyle:
Warren Buffet: “Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will do it.”
Mark Cuban: Reads more than 3 hours every day
Elon Musk: An avid reader himself. When asked how he learned to build rockets, he said “I read books.”
Clearly reading is a key part of their success. If you want to turn-up the success factors in your life, start reading (or listening) to more books!
